Bought it from a "big box" store because I'd been losing weight and wanted to keep track of it. Taylor was the only brand carried by the store so the pickings were slim. Maybe I'm digiphobic but I should have known better than to buy a bathroom scale that had to be PROGRAMMED with a thousand or so presses of buttons just to be able to weigh myself. Anyway, as others have stated, it is very unreliable--different weights registered within seconds, let alone minutes. Always comes up with "ERROR" reading after it attempts to give a current measure. Now I'm shopping for an old fashioned, no-frills, accurate and reliable scale so I don't have to wait for trips to the M.D.'s office to weigh in.

This scale is only a month old and, like the other reviewers have said, it's readings are all over the place. I have gained/lost 3-5 lbs in 10 minutes according to this thing. I even tested it by getting on with a 5 lb dumbell after weighing myself regularly, expecting to see a 5 lb increase, as the dumbell should register. No!! I no longer have my box, but I really want a refund on this product!!

I bought this scale from a local store after seeing it on sale for a to-good-to-be-true price. Unfortunately, I didn't see J. Motta's review before purchasing. If I step on and off the scale (after initializing it as the instructions explain) several times in the span of a minute, I get the same reading. However, if I wait a few minutes and try again, I can magically lose 3, 5, even 10 pounds from the last reading. Keep in mind the scale hasn't been touched or moved, is on a smooth, level, floor, and it doesn't matter if I re-initialize or not. How can I track my weight loss if this thing can't agree with itself in the span of an hour, let alone a day? The body fat/BIA features don't stand a chance, since the calculations require the useless weight reading. I'm returning it for a refund.

The floor is level and I stand on the thing the exact same way every time, and yet according to this scale, I'll gain or loose several pounds over the course of a few minutes.After owning it for several months it's now taken up the hobby of giving an Err0 code 80% of the time that I get on it. I get off, reset it according to the instructions, get back on and... Err0 again. Changed out the batteries.... no change in pathetic operation.This is my second Taylor scale and, I assure you, my absolute last. I'm pretty sure that it'll work much better as a Frisbee than it does as a scale.

This scale does not measure body fat accurately, period! What a waste of my time and money. I am a personal trainer and have access to $2000 body fat analyzer and state of the art skin fold calipers. This... whatever you want to call it... is junk.I am 44 years of age, highly athletic, and measure anywhere from 9%-10% body fat depending on who does the testing and what device is used. Today, after purchasing this... whatever you want to call it... I magically turned obese, weighing in at 26% body fat.Male, Female, athletic, standard, mode 1-3, doesn't make a bit of difference... this scale gets it wrong. Total junk.

Followed the instructions and it still does not work. The rep tells me I have to package the scale and send back to factory at my cost. This scale is accurate when it comes to weight. Although, my body fat seems to fluctuate a lot throughout the day. Some days its 19% others it 23% I'm not sure how accurate that is, but I mean, I guess my body fat is pretty low? Besides that the scale is great. I love that I can see when I've gained a few ounces so that I can get myself back on track before I gain a pound or two.

I needed a really accurate scale as I find my home scale and those in the medical offices I visit, never reading the same. I also wanted a scale that I could easily read so the raised digital feature was appealing. This scale really fits my needs and meets my expectations, though a little pricey. It is quite attractive. It is also great to weigh luggage before heading to the airport because it will hold a sizable bag without it falling off the platform. Be certain to use it on a hard surface as it will not work on carpet at all. The body fat measurement feature is a superfluous addition but may have appeal to others.

I purchased this scale after I had began a weight loss program and Tanita scale with all the body composition was revealed to me. Prime example was the actual fat loss Vs. water loss. It is amazing to see the fat loss and know that the diet is working even if the scales has stayed the same, due to water weight. The scale helps with daily water intake by the % reflected. For along time I did not believe that water intake had alot to do with weight loss, but was proven wrong. So drink your water!!!I used to get so discouraged if the scale did not reflect loss, but when my body fat is dropping I know that soon that scale will move and I allow my body to adjust.I did have a Tanita scale before purchasing this one, it did have a few composition details but not all the ones I have now. Love Tanita products.

I finally had to break down and buy a new body fat scale, as my old Tanita finally gave out after 8 years of faithful service. I found an inexpensive body fat scale and thought I would be happy . Big mistake. It was another brand and I knew right away it was going back: it was difficult to learn, it had a reading that changed every time I stepped on it and it's buttons were so flimsy it would only work intermittently. I sent it back and did more research. After reading the other positives on this Tanita scale, I decided to spend the extra money (when you divide it by the number of years my last one lasted, I realized it would not be so bad.This one is awesome. It was the most easy (even easier than my last Tanita), had more calculations (within 1%) and is Heavy Duty. You won't be sorry. VERY EASY VERY ACCURATE. I have already begun to loose weight, just from being inspired by watching my numbers go down. I'm 55 years old, and it has a function that tells me my metabolic age (rate I burn fat) has dropped from that of a 38 year old to a 31 year old tonight. That's inspiring. It does calculate fat better if you take it after a bath (hydrates=more muscle less fat) and at night.

I share the same sentimates as the other opinions here that you've already read ..this scale is absolutley TOPS. Any other scale that I have used delivers a slightly different reading each time that you step on it.Not the case with this scale! This scale will not only read in 1/10 pound increments, it will consistantly give you repeated readings within 1/10 of a pound each time that you step on it.I'm currently on a weight reduction program and weigh myself twice a day. I can't believe the over-all consistancy of this scale.I love this scale and would buy it again if for some reason I needed to.Admittedly my wife and I just use it for weighting ourselves and do not use any of its other recording features.This scale is amazingly and consistanly accurate ..did you know that under wear weigh in at about 1/10 to 2/10 of a pound?I also really love Amazon's great product review process ..both Amazon's product review process and totally lowest pricing keep me returning as an Amazon customer.

After reading reviews for many bathroom scales on Amazon, I stepped up to this one based on multiple reviews praising its accuracy.I'm glad it works for other folks, but it NEVER gave me consistent weights, not once. I don't mean day-to-day, I mean minute-to-minute. I don't mean a couple tenths or even a pound variance, I mean up to eight pound swings in three successive weighings.Yes, with fresh batteries. Yes, on a hard level surface -- hardwood floor, 18-inch bathroom tile, polished concrete. Indoors, outdoors, warm, cold, humid, dry, morning, noon, night, even in different cities -- I tried everything to try to make use of this expensive product, and it NEVER delivered.On a GOOD day, it'd only vary by two pounds on successive measurements. Sure, for someone who weighs about 200 lbs, that's only 1%, but it's also the amount you'd safely lose in a week on a weight loss program. When your potential progress (or lack thereof) is swallowed by the variance of the measuring device, the device is not useful.This wiggly plastic thing with feet that fall off every time you pick it up to move it is a sham. Digital pressure sensors? Bah! Useless if they're attached to flimsy junk.

I was really disappointed with this scale. It is very cheaply made and the buttons stuck as soon as I took it out of the box. The absolute worst part about it....it gives a different weight every time you step on the scale. Both myself and my 15 year old son weighed ourselves on a flat floor. His weight was only 102. We both knew he weighed more than that, so we moved it a couple feet over and then he weighed 120. We tried again, now 112. The same for my readings. I hope this was just one disfunctional scale for the sake of the scalemaker, but I definitely will pay a little more in the future for a better quality product. I am returning the scale and purchasing another brand.

The problem with reading reviews online is that "some" of the reviews are more than likely from the seller or an employee from the company. The problem with some of the reviews that are written by legitimate customers is that they are leaving their reviews immediately after their purchase, when the item they bought is working perfectly fine.When I first purchased this scale I thought it was the greatest purchase I have even made. I am a workout fanatic and have been on a strict workout regime for the past 25 plus years. I have to admit that when I bought this scale I was amazed that I would be able to track my weight, as well as my body fat, muscle composition, BMR, metabolic age, etc. I just couldn't believe that a scale so affordable could do all the things this scale claims it can. Well, it did everything it claimed it could do and I test it out, just for curiosity sake. I stopped working out for a couple weeks but still ate healthy, and the scale noticed the difference. My weight didn't increase but I went up in the correct areas for someone who did exactly what I did, stopped working out. I believe this scale works, but the problem is that it does NOT work correctly for that long.I have had this scale for a few years now and for the past year and a half it has been used ONLY as a traditional scale, only being able to read how much I weigh and nothing else. All the other features stopped working. I have no idea what my body fat is, my metabolic age or any of the other features that intrigued me to purchase this scale. So, long story short, I paid $130 for a sale that does the same thing as a $10 scale from Walmart can do."IF" you disregard my review and go forward with your purchase I encourage you to get a warranty and keep your receipt. This scale WILL stop working on your, just as it did to me, and you will be stuck with the most expensive "weight scale" in your area.

"Be wary about using your Tanita in a bathroom." 2008-05-22

Be wary of Tanita and their warranty claims. The product itself was decent, and fairly accurate, however Tanita is not a company that prides itself in customer service and product support. I used my scale in a normal bathroom environment, and after just 3 months you could see evaporation underneath the screen. I don't know if a gasket had a crack in it, or what the issue might have been, but the unit couldn't withstand the normal humidity of a bathroom. In fact, the unit was a good 20 feet from any active water, like a shower and tub.I shipped the unit in, and without even so much as a courtesy call, the "customer service manager" returned my unit with a note that my warranty claim was refused, even though I had spoken to someone before about the issue, and said it would be replaced no problem. The customer service manager was nice enough, but said that even though it was well within the boundaries of his discretion, he was going to refuse the claim, because they refuse all like claims regarding evaporation. He even admitted that it happens fairly often.

Stay away.

His recommendation? Buy another Tanita, and not place it in the bathroom. Right.

I got this scale last week and love it. I realize some of the numbers are not exact, but it gives you a pretty guy idea of where you are. I had bought several other scales to measure fat, water, etc and found them lacking. The display is large and easy to read. It has 4 different user settings, plus a guest setting. The set up on those took about 30 seconds. I would definitely recommend this to anyone.

I recently finished a successful weight loss campaign in which I reached my target weight 75 pounds lighter than when I began. Woohoo! Let's all feel great! However, now is when the real work begins. That weight has to stay off.My weight loss program had included standing on my doctor's Tanita scale at each appointment while weight, water retention, fat loss, and muscle mass were calibrated. One of the basic parts of my new life of maintenance meant that this responsibility was now passed on to me, but he only bathroom scale I owned gave me an approximate reading of gross weight with no breakdown. Such a Stone Age tool was no longer viable. I ordered my own Tanita through Amazon at a very affordable price and immediately began benefitting by accurate weight calibration plus the absolutely necessary readings of fat and water percentage.Shortly after I began my own readings with my Tanita, I went on a major vacation in which exercize and eating were two featured activities. I bought this scale fully expecting to return it and buy a higher rated one, but I was very surprised, its a great scale. First, yes the setup is not logical but if you read and follow each step EXACTLY it sets up fine. Once setup you have a choice on how to use this scale. Tap it, wait for zero and jump on for just weight, or before jumping on set the user number then jump on for weight, pounds of fat, % fat, % bone, % water and BMI. This gives you the choice for a quick weight or everything.In terms of accuracy, the numbers seem quite accurate, and very consistent. Jump on this scale two times and the numbers are exactly the same. This is a sign of a great scale. For a test I weighed myself holding 2 pounds of weight, then 5 pounds of weight, and sure enough my weight jumped 2 pounds and 5 pounds. Many people here have suggested that the scale somehow remembers your weight, but I haven't seen that at all. As for the other weights they seem to match pretty close to other measures the best I know them. Even the bone mass % for my wife came very close to what the doctor measured with some very expensive tests.As for negatives, there are a few. The black glass shows foot prints pretty badly. The scale isn't as logical in operation as it could be. And its a bit slow, with one reading after the next displaying, with no way to go forward or back.This may not be the most perfect scale in every way, but for the price, you get lots for the money.

I bought this scale at Wal-mart about a week ago on sale and love it. The set up is extremely easy and the directions were crystal clear. It literally involves pushing "set" and entering your age, height, and gender and you're all set!I have been weighing myself daily since I've bought it and it truly does show you the changes in .1 increments which is great. I went to the doctor this week as well and it turns out the scale is accurate! My last scale was always a couple pounds off and didn't give me nearly as much information.Please try this scale out- awesome price ($25 at Wal-Mart) and features. Do be aware your body weight can fluctuate several times a day based on water loss/retention, bowel movements, etc and that doesn't mean the scale is wrong!

This item stinks! I fully read the instruction booklet. While trying to change numbers , at each up or down press, the window would change the factor I was trying to set (i.e. height, weight, age, physical status). This caused me to cycle through each factor numerous time before finally getting it right. It finally weighed me, gave me a BMI and water ratio. I wasn't so lucky for my wife. As we cycled back and forth between numerical and factors, the machine started to include my factors into her mix. Then it would only give her weight - no BMI or water ratio. I wanted a good accurate scale with these factors and, therefore I did't mind paying the price asked. However, since it doesn't work it is worth the s price earned - nothing. They obviously spent no money in constructing the button contacts. While the mecanics were easy, the tools included to get it done were the cheapest they could find. It's going right back into the box and back to Amozon. I will NEVER by a SECA product again By the way, while 've bought hundreds of items through Amazon, this is my FIRST negative rating. I don't do these lightly.

This scale can only provide an "estimate" of your body fat percentage, an estimate that is far from accurate.Here's how it works. It sends pulses of electricity through your feet and legs... only. Basically, the upper part of your body is ignored because the pulses don't travel through that area. Using the measurements taken from your legs, the scale guesses your total body fat. The problem being that people store different amounts of fat in different places according to their genetics. So if you tend to store more fat in your legs, this machine will rate your bf% much higher and if you store more fat in your upper body, it will rate your bf% much lower.I would recommed a scale that has both the feet and hand plates for measurement. Those scales are much more accurate for your total body bf%. The same company that makes this scale makes one, but it is, of course, a little more expensive.

I did a little test to see if this thing was for real. It is not.Set the system for my weight and height and it said my body fat content was 25%. I then used the same settings and held 40 pounds of steel weights. The scale said my fat content was 36%. The weights had no fat in them. the scale assumed that 93% of the additional weight was fat I then said my height was 9 inches taller than I actually am. It said my body fat content was 12%. My actual fat content did not change. I told the computer I was 5 inches shorter than I actually am and it said my fat content was 31%. Obviously the scale is only using a simple algorithm to determine optimum weight for each height and then assumes any additional weight is fat. This is erroneous. A football linebacker has a different body build than a marathoner but this scale would tell them they had different fat content even if they were the same.A bogus gimmick. Do not trust.

I was debating between this product and the hand held electronic device, and I chose this because I felt it would be more accurate. I have owned it for 3 weeks now, and I have yet to get a reproducible reading that was accurate. I have watched videos, read the instructions and even called their support number. Generally it tells me I am 1.4% when I should be around 12%. The Myotape is great, but I would have been better off with the hand held devise and the measuring tape.

If you are a woman, the calipers require you to take a tricep measurement of your right tricep. There is no way you can do this by yourself, as you need to pinch the area and measure it at the same time with one hand. Also, it requires you to take all 3 measurements (tricep, illiac crest and thigh) because it will calculates a fat %, so it is limiting in that respect. If you want to be more scientific, I would get a manual caliper.It also is set up to measure and store 3 users, which may be an issue if you are training multiple people.

Worse, it did not work when put into body fat mode. The display did not act as predicted in the instructions, and it did not give body fat data. After many trials I call online fitness angry as heck. They told me to keep the scale and use it as a scale only. They credited my credit card. After a week of using it as a scale, I tried the body fat mode again and it worked. I called online fitness and left a message that they should put the purchase back on the credit card - which I don't think they have yet done.

Tanita service is so awful it has prompted me to write my first Amazon review. Like "Texan Hubris," I too had a bad experience with customer service. I own a BF-681W, the previous version of this product, purchased in August of 2006. I didn't use it frequently, and so the original provided batteries corroded slightly and the contacts in the scale for battery power eventually got ruined. I know, my bad.However, the batteries are contained within a plastic piece that pops out of the back of the metal scale. With a soldering iron, I could have it replaced in two minutes. The problem? Not only did the 800 number included with my original documentation no longer work (it was a recording for someone who wanted to talk to me locally--you know, the adult kind), but the people I did get ahold of using the long-distance number found on the company website had little to offer. Apparently, they don't sell spare parts for any of their consumer scales. So this expensive scale is rendered useless by a $2 part that should be easy to replace. I might be able to hack out a fix and keep using the scale. I would be very wary of buying any scale from this company. It was nice when it worked, but any little problem and they won't back their product. I WILL NOT buy another scale from them; be careful if you choose to do so.

I love this scale and all the data it gives. For my purposes, I pay particular attention to the fat%, water% and muscle mass% and, depending on the differences in those numbers, I can adjust my workouts to focus on lowering the fat% and increasing muscle mass% while maintaining weight--valuable info that one cannot get with just a weight scale. I do notice that it consistently weighs 1/2 lb. lower than my Weight Watcher scale--I use both scales. At least the weight difference is consistent. I would highly recommend this scale to anyone who is interested in a more wholistic perspective of what's going on with their body while monitoring weight and workout effects.

I purchased this scale 5 years ago and recently had an error message come up. I emailed Tanita and the regional representative contacted me by email. He had me check with new batteries and clean the contacts. Then he cross-referenced my model and lot numbers and said that my scale was still under warranty and if it met the warranty criteria would be replaced. Tanita has a 10 year warranty on this scale and my scale was 5 years old. He gave me an RMA# to submit with my receipt (which is required and I conveniently downloaded from Amazon from a purchase made 5 years ago!!) and about 10 days later I had my replacement scale!! no good. i so wanted this to work, i am obsessed with weight and that number really means a lot to me. i couldn't get a consistent reading every time i stepped on it. it was at most 5lbs off! i especially liked this scale because it recognized your weight and knew your stats to get your muscle/water % without keeping it stored in a button memory like the others. i keep my scale in the bathroom and don't want every visitor hitting a button and seeing my last weight. but it just wasn't consistent. i put hand weights on it and it couldn't weigh them correctly. i must have weighed myself 100 times the first day then sadly packed it back in the box and shipped it back. im still using my crappy digital noname scale that only weighs 1 lb too high. (yes i keep a 10lb weight in the bathroom to put on the scale everyday to make sure) maybe it got knocked around in shipping and the calibration was off, maybe i should only buy a scale in a store... oh well.

I purchased this scale in May and have been extremely satisfied. My old scale could be 2 or 3 pounds different within seconds of getting on and off. This one is EXACTLY the same (as one would expect for weighing twice in a couple of seconds). At this price, it seems to be a durable scale and is fairly easy to set up if you read the instructions. It also gives great information about how it measures bone mass, fat %, etc. If you have to weigh every day and it needs to be accurate, then this would be an excellent choice.

I was skeptical about the accuracy, so I have been cross checking it in my normal obsessive compulsive way. It's very accurate. One small thing to be careful of is the belt clip. My pants are pretty tight (or I wouldn't have bought the thing in the first place). I got in the car the first morning, when unbeknownst to me, the pedometer sprung off my belt (due to my annoying belly). Luckily, I found it under the seat (pedometer, not belly), and noticed a small hole drilled in the belt clip. I passed a piece of string through the hole, and looped it around my belt to avoid loosing it in the future. The only down side was that I missed getting credit for the steps while the unit was MIA in my car.

I had a completely dissapointing experience with TANITA. The feature to register your current age, height, and sex is only to calculate the IMC, fat and water percentage, but this scale doesn't store anything. You've got to register manually in a workbook using Excel or something like that to keep track and follow your improvement. My wife was angry because she could not retrived her last reading at all. Therefore I was convinced that it was't a good idea after all.

A few months after buying this the fat monitor just stopped working, but I'm fine with that since I was always a bit dubious of its accuracy anyway after reading about the technology. Not to mention, it's easier to just kick the button on the bottom and stand instead of fiddling around with buttons early in the morning. For that it works great and I appreciate the small increments even though I know weight can fluctuate wildly--it's still nice to see gradual progress. A nice bonus feature is that it's great for weighing cats and babies since the button at the bottom acts as a 'tare' button where you stand on it, hit the button, and it goes to zero so you can then pick up the baby, cat or any other squirming object that needs to be weighed and there is no subtraction math or squinting for the exact weight (since one pound is a big big difference when you weigh <15!).

My actual weight is lower on this scale than on my other home digital scale, which is equal with the hospital scales and gym scales I have compared it too. I weigh 265 and the weight is off by 2 lbs, my wife is 135 and it is 1 lb lower. These differences are approximate values, as they change from day to day. I was 275 when I purchased this scale and neither my fat percent or water weight has changed to reflect (though it does vary from day to day)what I have to assume to be a significant portion of fat loss. I regret purchasing this scale, as it provides me with no useful function.

Wifey bought me one for Christmas. Cuz I been workin' out. Still a downer gift if you ask me.
Thinks I like:
1. the digital readout is terrific for older eyes like mine. Conventional scale, I have trouble reading the weight - is that 175 or 177 ? This one says 175.6 in big black digits.
2. The tenth-of-a-pound is terrific when you're trying to lose weight. Just because, every bit helps.
3. It keeps a history. The two most important pieces of which are a) your last weight and b) your weight the first time you weighed. Again, if you are exercising/on weight reduction program, those items, especially b), are great to have. eg Have I lost weight since I started two months ago ?
4. Really quite good looking device.
5. Easy to put away. It is very slim, much slimmer than a traditional scale.
Scale also shows bone weight, muscle, fat, and water. I am skeptical - how could it possibly measure those items - but have to say I don't really know anything about it. Maybe it does. Even without those features, at $40 this is a great-looking scale with some great features.

The scale has 4 circular feet on the underside. One in each corner. One broke off, scale no longer useable. They appear to be plastic and not mounted very securely. Looking at the broken-off one, it appears it is perhaps glued on at two points, not secure-looking at all. Cheap-looking actually. Will try gluing it back.

I was asked to try out this product for a friend who works for SWAY.
Pros
1. It has a nice glass platform with a black base--very sleek looking--looks great in my bathroom. I think this scale really dresses up a bathroom.
2. Large display and easy to set up
3. Awesome instructions--can really tell someone took the time to make them as informative as they could. I didn't know what the importance of monitoring body fat, body water and muscle as part of the weight loss process, but now it really makes sense. I mean, thin people can still have unhealthy amounts of body fat and "larger" people like me may not necessarily be too fat--I am though. Very nice informative instructions that really educate!
4. As far as I could tell, compared to another scale I have, the weight was accurate and the proportions of fat to water and muscle seemed to make sense as how the instructions explained it--should work great for trending purposes.
5. I know I'm going to lose the instructions, so SWAY thought ahead and added some basic, short instructions on the back--still looks nice too if you turn it over.
6. User memory and scroll-through functions. I'll be able to get my whole family to use it as it has 10-user memory. Also, allows to review the readings by scrolling through after you have been measured.
7. Weight limit is 396 lbs (lets just say 400 lbs) so it can handle a heavy load. I had a friend try it--easily close to 300 lbs--and he had no problems.
Cons
1. The device turns off a little too fast--so you have to be ready to work with it when you get on and off. I think it just caught me off-guard the first time, but in the future I should be ready.
2. I'm not sure exactly how accurate it is. I haven't ever been to a doctor to have my body fat, body water and muscle measured, so I'm not sure how close it is. That being said, I feel confident that I'll be able to trend the readings over time to see as I'm losing weight if how body water, body fat and muscle are being affected. I guess the main thing is it will let me know if I'm losing the right kind of weight--which I think most people do not, which is why they rebound to their original weight after going through a diet. I have to say that overall, this is a very well made product that should do the job well. I would recommend this product--well done.

Still using the scale and just wanted to say a little on the results. Since I got the scale, I've been off and on diets several times-currently on one again. The great thing about this is to see the direct results of the diet on the scale--not just pound wise, but in percentage of body fat. Back in the fall I didn't really exercise and as a result, the body fat percentage didn't drop as much. Then it was depressing over the holidays to see it swing in the other direction. I've now gotten back on a diet--this time WITH exercise--and the change is a lot bigger. In 10 days (I've lost 8 pounds) and I've lost 1.4% body fat and gained 0.8% body muscle. Since muscle burns more calories than fat, this is a good thing that will help me lose more weight. Again, I'm not sure how accurate this is, but it doesn't matter. What really matters to me is being able to see the trends, which really helps. I also got my mom one of these (her choice) for her birthday last month. She's just getting started with it, so I'm interested to see how it works for her.

Still on the diet and down 25lbs now. The great thing about dieting this time is I'm really able to track body fat and body muscle. The update on where I'm at now...6% body fat gone and up about 3% muscle. I will always keep a body fat scale so I can see what's happening internally--make sure I keep the right percentage of body muscle so I can maintain a certain metabolism. The great thing is with losing this 25lbs, I've still been able to eat a lot of what I want (about 1-2 times a week) as long as most of the week I keep a handle on things. Even if you don't get one of these Sway Body Fat Scales (I would recommend one of these) you should get one no matter what.

This week I finished the formal part of my diet (I was part of a team that was competing in a 12-week Biggest Loser competition), but I will continue to keep this going as I'm now training for a 5K on May 1 and a Speed Triathlon in late July. I just posted "Before" and "After" pictures of my diet--which actually won me "Employee of the Month" for being the single biggest loser in the competition by losing 28lbs in 12 weeks!!
I have a few more comments on the scale, at the request of someone else who left a comment to my review.
1. As peoples bodies fluctuate throughout the day, it is highly recommended to weigh yourself at the same time each day. I've read that the best time to do this is at the beginning of the day (before taking in food and drink that can alter readings.) So I actually weighed myself every morning usually within about 10-15 minutes after I got out of the shower with just my underclothes, before I got dressed. I just wanted to be as consistent as possible, not throwing in any other variables that could throw off the readings. One thing that stayed consistent is that my feet (which are the contact points of my body) were freshly washed and clean, so they should have conducted the same each time.
2. There was also a question to see if there was any change when re-weighing myself several times within minutes of each time. I did do this at several occasions and I found that they were pretty much the same each time. The weight was dead-on each time, but the percentages changed just slightly as I stood differently or shifted weight while it was reading--but I would say this was all within an acceptable variance. To me, it was accurate enough to produce a trend.
3. During this twelve week period, I didn't just keep on a downward trend the whole time. I actually weighed myself pretty much every morning. I like having this be my conscience--I could see direct results when I had an "off" day, so I knew right off each morning that I needed to get back on track.
4. The interesting thing was to see changes from night to morning. Sometimes I weighed myself before bed and after I got up and there would sometimes be .5lb to 1.5lb differences--and for some people it could be even more. That was cool to see how much it can fluctuate. I could also see how much I lost after a good workout--a lot of which was water weight lost through sweat.
For me to lose the 28lbs in 12 weeks, there were a couple key things for me that really helped and this body fat scale was definitely a critical tool in assessing my progress. I did change my diet--but in a reasonable way--and added exercise. The one thing that helped me get toned up to be able to do other exercise was a T-Zone Vibration Machine--which uses vibrations to work the muscles in your body by just standing on it--similar to what NASA uses to help astronauts maintain bone mass and muscle strength. I hope I have not rambled on through these reviews--may have been better going on a blog--but I thought it would be helpful to other people looking to buy this scale and looking to lose weight. I hope others can find success in using this scale with their own diet system. The main thing is, just a regular weight scale really isn't enough--you need to know what type of body tissue you are gaining or losing--it really matters! Good luck out there!

I decided to buy this as an upgrade to HBF-306C which, in my opinion, is a piece of trash. I have to say that this scale is pretty consistent, but is a little off. I know for a fact that I am 17%BF, but this scale insists that I am in the 22% range. This is a pretty good product for keeping track of your weight loss (or gain). It is not super accurate though, but still gives you an idea of whats going on. I had my body composition done professionally. I checked it against the scale and found that if I entered myself as a male, it was very accurate (I'm female). I believe this is because it doesn't account for athletic body types.

I was excited to get this scale. It's my first scale that does more than tell you how much you weigh. I don't really have a way to tell how accurate the weight reading is. But I do know that it's consistent. I've tried all sorts of different tests: Weighing myself multiple times, recalibrating the scale each time, weighing myself with shoes, then without shoes, then weighing the shoes to see if me + shoes = me wearing shoes, etc. etc. The numbers always seem to come out the way they should.

The same goes for the other readings - I have no way of knowing how accurate they are. But across a few days, resting metabolism varies by no more than 10-15 calories, skeletal muscle and body fat stay within 1%, visceral fat is always the same number, and BMI only varies slightly with day-to-day weight changes.

It's been a little under three weeks so far with the scale, so I haven't really had it long enough to see a significant trend forming based on my recent exercise regimen. But being able to see all of those values really keeps your behavior in check. Every time you see one of the values change for the better, it helps to renew your resolve. I've got a lot of room to improve, and I think this scale is really going to help me maintain my focus.

In my opinion, it's worth double what I paid for it. I only wish (manufacturers, take note!) that there was more you could do with the memory function. It keeps 90 days worth of data for each user profile, but you can only view today, yesterday, last week, last month, and 90 days ago. I'd like to see a little USB port in there where you could put a memory stick and it would download a CSV or other delimited text file containing your history. It would be a simple matter to import the file into a spreadsheet application to view charts and graphs of your progress.

The only con is that the white plastic thing tends to fall out of the "hole" so you have to hold the product right when measuring. bought at sports academy. i wieghed 242 Ibs. when i started my body fat was 24.6 lost 52Ibs and now my body fat is 22.0 %. and i have cut abs. and bfi has stayed near the same the whole time. the novelty toy goes off a national average of height and weight. you set at the front and just spits out numbers like a cheap caculator. if i put in there my weight is 130Ibs. it gives you a 11% body fat. junk

I purchased this item last year to aid in my weight loss goals. Of course, I wasn't pleased with the readout I was getting since I was overweight. I recently got serious about losing weight and have lost 23 lbs. I only have 10 more pounds to go. The Omron tells me that my body fat is the same as when I started. In fact, some of the readings I get are higher than when I started. I have followed the directions to a tee and am still getting different readings every time I use it. In addition, my BMI has remained unchanged. I think the Omron is easy to use and is somewhat accurate, but obviously not as accurate as I had hoped. I think the only way to get a real idea of your body fat and BMI is at the doctor's office or at a gym where they have a water tank.

I was so excited to get this fat analyzer thinking that it would give me accurate information for me and my body size. I input the data regarding my height, weight and age just as it asked, I held on to the handles and it gave me a reading. I agreed with the reading because I know just about where my BMI is for my size. Then I decided to input my ideal height, weight and age as guest #9, just for grins and giggles. So I put these figures in and held on to the handles. I was thinking that it would error out, or something, because surely the "electrical current" would find me out to be a liar. It didn't. It gave me an ideal BMI and body fat percentage for the data I inputted. This machine is nothing more than a calculator. Don't waste your money. I saw a BMI/fat analyzer at my local grocery store for $7.99. I bet it's the same thing as this one, only without handles.

The key to getting consistent results with this device is to measure under the same hydration conditions. My suggestion: wake up, urinate, and then weigh and body fat analyze yourself using this device. While it's true that this is your most dehydrated state of the day (thus resulting in your lowest possible body fat percentage) at least this way you can track your progress consistently. My body fat percentage goes up like 3% after I've rehydrated myself in the morning (I drink a lot of water). While I can't testify to its exact accuracy, it definitely gets the trend correct. As I've lost fat (as measured by looking in the mirror, weighing myself and strength gains/maintenance in the gym during weight lifting), the analyzer shows a decrease in % body fat. The device also picked up periods when I've lost muscle (as measured by loss of strength in the gym during weight lifting). It feels pretty accurate at picking up small real changes. I have a set of calipers, and I find them to be kinda useless because I'm not trained in using them and you can only reach some sites of measurement. The Omron device is much more useful to me than the calipers.

The Tanita scale is a very good product. You must realize that it can be fooled as it operates on very simple principles. That being said, if used as intended, you can get a daily accurate account of how you're doing. It's like standing in front of St. Peter at the golden gates: Why lie? Tell the truth and deal with it. He'll know anyway. The scale tells you exactly how you're doing; that way you can deal with it and improve. I like the speed of the scale's diagnostics. Interesting principles on how it measures. Makes you think about what you intake and how it affects your body. Tried different things that I knew the exact weight of from gram scales and very accurate laboratory scales. Tanita had it right every time. Only thing to fault is that my tone beeper quit working. For me that's no problem: I hated that feature anyway. Battery life is good and I like that it repeats three times so I can see it, record it, and then it's off to save the batteries. Like I said: Very good product, well constructed, well thought out, and very accurate. "Nuff said.

Be wary of Tanita and their warranty claims. The product itself was decent, and fairly accurate, however Tanita is not a company that prides itself in customer service and product support. I used my scale in a normal bathroom environment, and after just 3 months you could see evaporation underneath the screen. I don't know if a gasket had a crack in it, or what the issue might have been, but the unit couldn't withstand the normal humidity of a bathroom. In fact, the unit was a good 20 feet from any active water, like a shower and tub.I shipped the unit in, and without even so much as a courtesy call, the "customer service manager" returned my unit with a note that my warranty claim was refused, even though I had spoken to someone before about the issue, and said it would be replaced no problem. The customer service manager was nice enough, but said that even though it was well within the boundaries of his discretion, he was going to refuse the claim, because they refuse all like claims regarding evaporation. He even admitted that it happens fairly often.Stay away.His recommendation? Buy another Tanita, and not place it in the bathroom. Right.

My 15 year-old Health-o-Meter scale recently gave out. So, I did my homework and selected the HBF-400 as the best unit for the price. I'm very pleased with the results. (1) It's easy to use. Press the button, it callibrates itself, step on the scale, and it quickly gives a weight reading. Remarkably fast, considering how incidental body movement must affect accuracy. And it gives me an appreciation of why manufacturers callibrate their scales in two-tenth units. If they tried to specifiy accuracy down to the nearest tenth, it would take much longer for a person's body sway to dampen. (2) It's easy to read. The large numbers make reading it a snap. (3) It is an attractive unit. Well-crafted. Modern looking. Much nicer than its picture. (4) The body fat analyzer seems accurate. It matched exactly with the results I recently got at a health fair. Although I primarily purchased the HBF-400 as a better scale to track my diet, the fat analyzer is a nice motivational feature. It reassures me that, even when there is a slight weight rebound, my overall fat trend is proceeding in the right direction. (5) Lastly, the accuracy of the scale makes me appreciate why my body weight seems to fluctuate so much. With my old scale (plus or minus one pound readings), I couldn't figure out why I seemed to gain or lose a couple of pounds within the same day. With the Omron scale, I can see how drinking a glass of water, eating a meal, or going to the bathroom affects each reading. I gave this product a 5-star rating. It exceeded all of my expectations.

I've been using this scale for over a month and am very pleased with it. First, the design: it is very sturdy and looks nice, in my opinion, and would probably complement most bathroom floors. I don't have a problem reading the display with 20/200 vision (okay maybe a little squinting involved). As far as accuracy, it seems very consistent for me but I haven't checked its precision to the pound. I will say that my old scale showed a five pound difference and after a visit to the doctor's scale, this new one jived much better. Now the features: it is very helpful to have one stop shopping for body fat% and water%. It calculates this very quickly and also seems consistent from day to day (I normally use the scale first thing in the morning). Setting up users (up to 10) is simple and quick, after a quick glance at the instructions. Selecting the user is also easy, but takes a few times to get the hang. You first step on the scale with one foot so you can quickly remove it after your user number pops up. At first, I didn't take my foot off quickly enough and it would scroll through all the user numbers (even if none of the others were set up). But you soon get used to the procedure and won't have any problems. Overall this is a great value and I highly recommend this scale. I'd still consider it at twice the price. I'm happy with the purchase ... now I just need to lose more weight!

This is a really great looking scale, no doubt about that. But, when it comes to the 'advanced' functions (beyond simple weight display) it's not so good. For some reason ours tends to lose the multiple user settings over a few days though it still weighs reasonably accurately. Also, the method of changing from one user to another is flakey at best and nonfunctional at worst.On the positive side (beyond the good looks) the display is large and easy to read, the readings don't jerk around a great deal as some scales do, and the platform is a good size and quite stable.

This is by far the fanciest bathroom scale I have ever owned! For years, we have always used an old-fashioned scale. I thought it would be nice to get a digital scale to replace our very old scale.You can weigh yourself quickly and easily by just turning the scale on and stepping on as you would with any scale. You can also enter your height etc and get more advanced readings by using the hand held portion as well.The one thing that was a bit disconcerting to me is that the way this works is by sending low levels of electric current through your body! (Note the metal portions you stand on and the metal grips on the handle).It is probably a very small and harmless bit of electricity... but there is a warning saying this scale should not be used by pregnant women. After I read that warning, I stopped using the scale for anything more than quick weight measurements (ie I stopped using the hand held part) except on rare occasion.It is interesting to measure your muscle percentage, fat percentage etc... but not something that you need to do daily or even very often. I will still use this feature but not more often than once every few months.

I bought this scale because I was disenchanted by the large fluctuations of several foot only body fat monitors that I have owned. Most body fat monitors seem to have a strong (negative) correlation between hydration level and body fat percent. Because this scale has a hand and foot sensor I thought that the body cross section would be increased enough to overcome this problem. I was pleased that this scale more than halved measurement variance as well as greatly decreased the correlation between hydration (measured independently) and body fat percent. The reason this scale only gets three stars is the near perfect correlation between body fat percent and skeletal muscle mass. This effectively reduces this device to a scale and body fat analyzer. If you want a tool that gives you independent weight, BF% AND muscle mass measurements you will need to look elsewhere.

It's not like I neede the Omron HBF-510W Full Body Composition Monitor with Scale from Amazon Vine to know exactly how out of shape I am. But the inner geek (who is buried beneath layers of "insulation") was curious about all the different numbers this would show. So I yielded to the little critter and selected this as a Vine review product. And sadly I have to admit that it is quite useful.In addition to basic weight, the scale also measures body fat percentage and body mass index using bioelectrical impedance. It also gives you a reading of skeletal muscle % so you can see how much "good weight" you have, as well as your visceral fat level, which is that hidden fat surrounding your organs. So rather than just getting that single "I weight nnn pounds" number, you get a much more complete picture as to your overall health. And using this over time, you can find out if your current fitness program is actually moving you in the right direction.After using this for a few months, I'm quite happy. The readings are quick, the information is useful, and I'd have a hard time going back to using a normal scale with a single number. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this scale to others looking for a better tool to assess their overall body composition.

I bought this scale after reading many of the glowing reviews, feeling that it was unlikely that I would also receive a defective product. Unfortunately, after barely 60 days of use, the scale ceased functioning entirely yesterday. It is well outside of the return period, too, so I won't be recouping any of my loss on this one. My advice is to skip this brand's poor quality and find a better, cheaper scale that won't quit so easily!

"Good Quality, But Exercise Caution When Using..." 2010-05-23

If I have any one problem with Escali's High-Capacity Bathroom Scale, it would be it's propensity towards tipping. It's a sturdy scale; the platform design made me skeptical that a piece of glass -- although, thick -- would support my weight, though I was proven wrong. The scale doesn't feel a tad bit under duress from me or my much lighter wife being on it. However, having large thighs, and wearing a size 13 shoe, I find the platform difficult for me to stand completely upright on. Both the width and the length of the circular platform make it a bit of a challenge for me to safely square my feet and accurately get a reading. Therein lies the problem: when stepping on the scale, because my feet don't fit perfectly, my first step tends to be more towards it's side, tipping the scale if I don't quickly place my second foot down to plant myself. I often have to hold on to the bathroom door, balancing myself, until both feet are on the platform securely. The suction cups help, but can only do so much. Now, is this a huge problem, does this stop me from actually getting an accurate, consistent read, or from even using the scale at all? Simply, no. I've not fallen once. Though, I'd imagine someone with balance issues, knee problems, or other impairments could potentially find this scale a bit unsafe. (Admittedly, there's a learning curve for how to stand on it, and I've since learned and now am able to get accurate readings).My reason for purchasing this scale was my thinking I may be near it's 440lbs. limit. As it turns out, I was about 100lbs. or so off, having not been weighed in a few years. So I bought it for its weight capacity, not its features (which seem to drive up it's price), and my overestimate in weight may have cost me $10-$15. For this reason, I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a high capacity scale with no knowledge of their current weight to consider being weighed by a physician first, and then buying according to how much capacity you need (like me, you may feel like you've gained a lot, but may be surprised to find you're actually in a cheaper, normal capacity scale's range).All in all, the Escali is consistent (I often get the same reading two, three, even four times in a row with a normal foot placement), and durable (in six months, not one error warning, no signs of wear), but the expensive, fancy "features" couldn't be more useless. Anyone with large amounts of muscle can easily fool the scale's body fat indicator (and I'm not certain how to prove or disprove it's water weight reading). Fortunately, you can still use it just as a scale, bypassing the programmable settings by placing one foot on it to turn it "on", then removing your foot before it brings up the sequence of numbers corresponding to the users you've entered. Yet, if these features make this scale anymore expensive than other high capacity ones, you may want the next one lower in price. Still, what you pay is fair for a pretty solid quality, high capacity scale.

I like the look and feel of the scale. This is my first glass scale and I prefer it to the metal type scales I have owned in the past. The plus is the large capacity, the main reason most people have purchased this scale is due to the high capacity I am sure, so that is a very good advantage. The accuracy seems to be on point for me. I have not had any misreadings or fluctuations while weighing myself. I read where people mentioned that it does not keep a record of your previous weight, so that you can compare and monitor gain or loss, that would be nice to have, but I don't have a problem writing my weight down in my journal and keeping track of it myself. I am more concerned with getting an accurate reading of my weight. With scales I had in the past, you had to step on, be very still, make sure it was even, and then get a readout. With this one, I step on, wait a few seconds, step off, and read my weight. Simple and easy. I like that.So far I haven't had any tip overs. There are 4 suction type cups on the bottom and they hold it in place for me. When I pick it up to place it back under my bed, I have to give a little pull to get it off the floor so I am not concerned with it flipping or tipping over. It's secure.The scale also has a nice stylish look to it, that is a plus.Overall, it is a great scale with high capacity that gives you an accurate reading of your weight.

This one works great but you need to follow the instructions carefully and take measurements at a consistent time of day, otherwise your body fat can fluctuate as much as 5-8%. I have bought and returned about 10 scales within the last year or so. I was so frustrated by scales that don't work properly. I would get on and off the scales a couple of times and within the hour my weight was off by as much as 4-5 lbs. This is the first scale that gives consistent readings. Other people in my family tried it as well and they like it also. In fact my mom wants me to order one for her. I found this scale by doing research for most accurate bathroom scales and this one was highly recommended. It was one of the best scales by consumer research.

Extremely user friendly device. I can't imagine why some have reported difficulties and unreliable measurements. It works quickly and it is nice to see the comparison to a recent reading. We did notice that body fat composition changes depending on whether you enter male or female and this does not seem to make sense since you would think that body fat is body fat. Obviously, there is no way to calibrate or determine whether the readings are accurate, so you have to have faith that the system is accurate. Other than that, it seems to be a reliable system.

I use this one and another excellent set of scales. There is probably .5 lb difference between the two, but they have different advantages. This one may be my favorite, because I can compare my results with 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, etc.

I'm particularly interested in building muscle and of course when you do that, your weight goes up, you may panic and think things are going poorly, when they aren't. I don't pay as much attention to the weight as I do the other factors. Am I building more muscle? Is my fat % going up, down, or staying the same? Some of that 'weight gain' may be muscle, which is heavier than fat.

Scales that show me more than just weight keep me accountable and don't make me crazy when I gain a pound or two, as long as one of the more important indicators are improving, fat%, muscle growth, etc.I recommend this scale. I use it every day. It helps me reach my fitness goals.

The first thing I noticed was the weight and durability of this unit. It is just over 6lbs, and feels very solid. The setup was very easy and the explanation in the manual of what each different measurement meant and where different age ranges should be was very helpful. I took the advice of the other reviewer on here and made a spreadsheet in excel to track my results. Between the 516 and the 514 the only difference that I can find is the memory in the unit, 180 days vs 90, but with such a small price difference the 516 is worth it.

For all the people who said this item was inacurate. I totally disagree. I have used it now for about a month and have crossrefernced data through other sources for acurracy. It checks out. Those people who don't buy the age readout need to realize that this product is sold worldwide and compared to other areas the U.S. is generally overwieght thus the age readout will seem high. BMI and other data I believe to be right on. TI think this item is a very good value.

The HBF-306C features two modes -- athlete and normal -- for accurate results. The device is a breeze to use, and it returns measurement results in seven seconds for both Bi method (Bioelectrical Impedance Method) and BMI (Body Mass Index). The unit displays the measured value of your body fat percentage through the BMI method, and indicates the body mass in for ranges from low, normal, high, and very high according to the BMI value.
What is the Bioelectrical Impedance Method?
Muscles, blood vessels and bones are body tissues having a high water content that conduct electricity easily. Body fat is tissue that has little electric conductivity. The Body Fat Analyzer sends an extremely weak electrical current of 50 kHz and 500 µA through your body to determine the amount of fat tissue. This weak electrical current is not felt while operating the Body Fat Analyzer. The Bioelectrical Impedance Method safely combines the electric resistance with the distance of the electricity conducted. Correct posture and consistent measuring conditions need to be maintained for the best results.
Operating the Analyzer
To use the HBF-306C you must first set your personal datYou must first select between the Normal and Athlete modes. To determine if you should select Normal or Athlete, you must calculate your FIT index by using the following formula:

FIT Index = Frequency x Intensity x Time

Frequency is a single digit number from one to five that represents your frequency of exercise. If you exercise daily or almost daily, then use the number five; three to four times per week use four; one to two times per week use three; a few times per month use two; and for less than once a month use one. If you workout vigorously, then you use the number five to represent your intensity level; if you workout with moderate or light effort, use the number four.
Meanwhile, time is a single digit number from four to one that represents the duration of your workout. If you exercise for 45 minutes or more, then use the number four; 30-44 minutes use three; 15-29 minutes use two; and for less than 15 minutes use one. For example, if you run five times a week for 30 minutes, your FIT index would be 75 (5 x 5 x 3 = 75) and you would select the Athlete setting. If your FIT index is greater than 60, you should select the Athlete setting. Any number below would demand a normal setting.
After determining your FIT index and selecting between the Athlete and Normal setting, the remaining personal data is very straightforward. Simply enter your height, weight, age and gender. When all the data is fixed and stored, the analyzer screen will display "Ready," and you'll be ready to take your first body fat measurements.
Note: For the following cases, the body fat percentage measured by this unit may significantly differ from the actual body fat percentage.

Finally, I'm not obsessing about the number on the scale. This device is great because you weigh yourself once (in a while), put in some other basic information and the little guy does its thing. I can see different numbers that show a true reading of where I am physically. We all know it's not just about the weight. This device shows you were you are and it has a chart to tell you where you should be. I love it!

I was expecting great things from this monitor. However, I'm very disappointed.This monitor is VERY inconsistent. When I say inconsistent, I'm not talking about using it at varied times throughout the day, etc. That's no excuse for what is going on now.

For instance, I just measured my body fat, in the same exact arm position (arms out) and hand position (thumbs down, gripping at the same pressure). I tested myself six times within TWO minutes.

My readings were:

31.9

28.4

31.5

31.6

There is a deviation of almost THREE full body fat points within minutes. Believe me, I held the same exact physical position each time.

I'm quickly losing faith in this allegedly accurate monitor. I wouldn't recommend purchasing this product.

I have used various methods to determine my body fat percentage. This includes, Taylor scales with impedance features, bodyfat calipers, and even formula based on bodypart measurements. All of these methods are comparable by 2-3%. However, I decided to buy the Omron with hopes it would be a convenient way to measure my bodyfat. I was highly disappointed. I have tried it several times and each time it says that I am 8% lower in bodyfat than the other methods mentioned above. It could be a usable tool if it were 2-5% off but at 8% off it's unusable.

I would recommend Accu-Measure skinfold calipers instead. They are half the cost and twice as accurate.

This scale is accurate and having 2 person settings is really nice. The feature of being able to weigh a 3rd person and not bothering the 2 person settings is a real plus to me. You can also see the day before weight which is helpful. I have recommended this scale to others already. It has a nice sleek and clean look and fits my decor nicely. I really do not have a bad thing to say about it. I can step on it several times and get the same reading. The .2 increments is very helpful when one is on a very specific diet and need to have that feature.

The top buttons are for setup only. You turn it on and select one of two personal profiles by pushing the front buttons with your toe. I bought this scale because I liked an old model Tanita scale I had until its LCD (liquid crystal display) died. Tanita won't repair an out of warranty product. This scale doesn't suffer from feature overload. I have no idea how to verify whether the fat and water composition readings are accurate. At least they are sane and consistent, as is the weight, which I did check using free weights. The precision is 0.2 pounds, and the reading stays the same if you weigh yourself several times.

What else is there to say, but this thing doesn't work at all. I'm 27 and in good shape and it says I'm a body age of 52. I'm 201 wit a bf of 9% and I know this because I have been measured many times manually. I can understand being off 1% here or there, but being off by 6% is quite bad for a product that is almost $100.

I was so hesitant to get this scale. $80? Wow! I'm a poor college student.. but this was worth every penny. I am a results oriented person (well, aren't we all?).... I knew I need to see hard facts and proof of improvement. This scale is reliable. Sure, it varies, like all scales. It doesn't matter if its 5 lbs different than your doctor's scale. Obviously, if you have weight to lose, and you lose 20 lbs, it'll show up! Now when it comes to this sort of technology, don't sell yourself cheap. It's not really worth saving $40 over. You want something that is going to work and this is a good company.

This scale gave me a MAJOR wake up call. I knew what my weight range was in, I knew it was getting out of hand. I needed to lose a third of me. If you're overweight or obese, this scale will give you a reality check. If you aren't, I think this scale would be a good preventative method. Maybe weigh yourself once a month, check your body fat, get it under control before two years and a hundred lbs later.

Out of the box... it's sleek and light weight. Feels well made and looks attractive. It took me about 15-20 minutes to get it started and flip through the instructions. The instructions are great - very detailed. The scale is very easy to use, but you're gonna have to read the instructions for the first time through. It wasn't intuitive but certainly not difficult. I like how it uses both arms and feet to measure to try and get the most accurate body fat measurement. Having the separate component for hands is wonderful. It increases the accuracy as I said and I don't have to bend over to press little buttons on the floor.

First you set the month, date, year, time... then your age/height/gender. As I found out, the surface you weigh on makes a difference! Make sure it's a hard level surface! In the instruction manual it gives you a description of what ideal ranges are for body fat, skeletal percentage, visceral fat, BMI, etc. It also shows you on the digital pad if it's below normal, normal, serious or very serious (-, 0, +, ++). It comes with this excellent chart to record all your readings on. Make photocopies! Press the user button (1,2,3 or 4). Once it gets your weight stable, it flashes a few times... hold the device out with your arms 90 degrees... then it gives you all the readings in one swipe. Just press the button for the result you want. It's quick and easy. Takes what... 20 seconds? Wouldn't be hard to do twice a month at all.

I just want to say though that I think the extras on this scale are kind of silly. I can calculate BMI and resting metabolism online just as accurately and for free. I'm not sure what they do to calculate body age... but it's probably a formula based on your measurements. I do however appreciate the body fat percentage, visceral fat level and skeletal muscle percentage. So in a way, I think some of the "bells and whistles" on this scale are unnecessary but convenient.

Scale is easy to use and body fat monitor is really handy. Really simple to use and provides averages over a period of days or weeks. The only reason I took off a star is that the scale really doesn't provide details as to how accurate it is. Most scales will provide an accuracy rating, but this one does not tell you how accurate the body fat monitor is. It *appears* pretty accurate, but I wish I had some hard figures to run with.

I purchased this unit because of the excellent reputation of the manufacturer and because of the product features. When I received it, I was pleasantly surprised to find that it looks much better than the picture represents. Although the design is simple, the fit & finish details give it the appearance of a finely-crafted instrument. And it is. I recently had my body fat percentage tested at a health fair and the results were the same as the Omron's. The weight registered matches my Health-o-Meter scale, but the Omron is a lot more consistent. The HBF-400 isn't perfect - if I place my feet off-center or if I shift my weight toward my heels or toes, it may register a slightly different reading. However, if I take the effort to weigh myself the same way each time, the readings are remarkably accurate. Highly recommended.
